What are track conditions like? The Oombi track covers a diverse range of terrains. You can expect easy to difficult conditions as the tour is on unmaintained roads. SxS’s will go off this track exploring into virgin bush. The tour will include river crossings, rocky climbs, salt pans, muddy sections and thick river sand, as well as open grassy plains. This is not a high speed track, rather more of an endurance trial. Please drive with this in mind!
-
How many Km's do we travel in a day? Each day's riding can vary from 19km to 120km which can take all day to cover. We will cover approx 600-700km of tracks over the 10 days. We do not have a set itinerary that we always follow, but we will fill the days, with everyone satisfied with both seat time in their SxS and the full cultural experience that the Morgan family bring to these tours.
-
Where is the Start and Finish point? Our tours for 2025 will leave from the Morgan Family property on the corner of King River Road & Great Northern Highway just outside of Wyndham at 8am. Weather and track conditions permitting we will skirt the Cockburn Ranges, cross the Pentecost River and enter traditionally owned lands at Home Valley Station where the track turns wild. The Oombi Track will take us as far north as the Lynne River before we turn to return south exploring new country via the track back out. 10x day after leaving Wyndham we will arrive back to our starting point.
-
What type of accommodation should I expect? The Kimberley can be rocky terrain in some parts, so we supply stretcher tent style beds that are up off the ground. These are all single sizes. You will need to bring your pillow, blanket and a sheet if you would like one. If you are unsure what you are in for, these stretchers are available from most ANACONDA stores and you can go and give one a test drive in store if you want to.
-
Are toilets provided? We are a minimal impact tour, hence there are no permanent building structures for facilities like toilets. This is a true off grid experience where you will need to bring a shovel, toilet paper and cigarette lighter to carry on your buggy. You must either burn your waste paper, and must be dug deep enough so wild animals like Dingoes do not dig it up. When the terrain allows it we will endeavour to set up a temporary drop style toilet away from the camp site, however this is not possible every night.
-
Are showers provided? This track is remote and wild as it gets and there is no infrastructure such as shower facilities available permanently. How ever we do provide a hot shower that is a portable set up when we are camped on or near a water way. We aim to provide a hot shower every night but is sometimes not always possible due to the terrain. Our shower set up is unique and consistent of an open air shower under the stars in a private setting.
-
What type of meals are provided ?Our meals are camp style cooking both for breakfast and dinner. Lunches vary depending on the activities of the day, mostly sandwiches or wraps with meat and salad. But no one goes hungry!
-
Are fizzy drinks provided? The track is remote and we try to keep our support vehicles weight down to avoid unnecessary strain on the vehicles. Hence why we provide a soda stream bottle per person to mix their own fizzy drinks on the go that you can stock your buggy fridge with. We are equipped with a very safe water purification system on one of our support vehicles that can produce endless amounts of clean drinking water every day.
-
Are snacks included?Yes each buggy is given a snack bag that you will carry with you for the duration of the trip. This means you will always have snacks on hand if you get peckish. There is no re supply of food on the track.
-
What sort of water bottle should I bring? The Kimberley is hot, therefore please bring an insulated style drink bottle that you can re fill each day from the supply truck. Make sure it is a sturdy one that can hold at least 1-2 litres.
-
Is alcohol included in the package?Due to alcohol restrictions in the Kimberley we Do Not supply alcohol as part of the package. But we are happy to carry your own personal supply in one of our support vehicles. We DO NOT permit glass on our tours, so please bring cans or decant into a plastic reusable container. Information on East Kimberly alcohol restrictions are attached below.
-
What type of buggy's are allowed on the tour?Any make or model buggy is welcome on the track, however we do require a minimum tyre size of 29". Your buggy must also be in excellent mechanical condition. Please see 'mechanical condition' for requirements.
-
What conditions does my buggy need to be in?Your SxS needs to be in excellent mechanical condition. We would highly recommend you have your SxS comprehensively serviced before the tour.
-
What spare parts do I need to bring for my buggy? You must carry a spare wheel and tools to suit your SxS. We recommend bringing 1lt of engine, trans oil, spare air filer, CV, CV boots, drive belt. These can be consolidated if your group are all running the same make and model. Parts are generally not available in the Kimberley. And there are no services available along the route.
-
Is fuel included in the package? Please carry an additional 15lt of fuel onboard above the factory size tank capacity. And ensure fuel tanks are full at start point. We will carry the rest of the fuel needed on a support vehicle to cover the tour and this is charged out as a user pay setup at the end.
-
What happens if a catastrophic failure occurs? Please note that in the case of a catastrophic failure there is very limited options to ship your SxS out. The Barge will cost $7000 plus. And this can only reach from one location on the track. Recovery costs are on a do and charge basis. We will attempt to repair or recover at our discretion.
-
What happens if my buggy requires a replacement part to keep going? Our tour leader Bj can bush fix a lot of issues along the way, but a helicopter is the only way to source parts not with us and this attaches a minimum cost of $3000 to reach us - plus freight from Sydney or Darwin. Nothing arrives to the Kimberley’s in less than 2-3 weeks so please understand if you break it, you maybe in for a long wait. Again - Please drive with this in mind!
-
What happens if I get a flat tyre?Tyre patches and plugs - please bring your own supply. We cover a lot of rocky terrain. The main Oombi track that hasn’t seen a grader in nearly 20 years.
-
What level of fitness do I need for the track? Please be of reasonable fitness and good health. If you require any medication please bring enough to cover 12x day for any unforeseen events. Bring covered shoes, and be Sun Smart.
